Comparing The Different Choices
Everyone considers the best multi-purpose power tool to be the Fein Multimaster line of tools. With their special technology you'll be able to precisely cut any sort of drywall, or complete the finishing of wood projects. Because the patents ran out a few years ago, other manufacturers have been able to jump into the market with their own tools. The best one is still considered to be the Fein Multimaster. They are very expensive and when you add in the cost of all the accessories and blades, it puts it out of reach of many of the casual home remodeler. You can save up to 30% if you search on places like eBay and Amazon to find one. Unfortunately, even with a 30% discount, a Fein multimaster tool is still too much for many people.
The Bosch Multi-X is considered a strong substitute for a Fein. It cuts just as well in the costs about half as much. The tricky thing to watch out for is its short battery life since it's a cordless tool. What's nice about it is the can reach into places where the Fein tools cannot.
In addition to the Bosch, there are other multimaster tools out there on the market such as the Dremel 6300 and the Rockwell Sonicrafter. Both of them sell for much less than the Fein Multimaster and work well decently enough. The quality isn't nearly as good as the fine with these tools, but they are affordable choices for the amateur craftsman or home remodeler. A problem with all these multimaster tools are their high cost and short life of their blades. You'll find that the blades for all of these units basically cost the same and if you go through a lot of them you can probably find a discount to help ease the pain or replacing them all of the time.
The top of the hill is still a Fein Multimaster, but once Bosch fixes the issues with their batteries, many contractors will like them with their lower costs and increased portability. The Rockwell and Dremel will have to languish in the lower end of the market until they can improve their units.

Fein developed oscillating multimaster tools over 41 years ago, and there are a bunch to choose from. The Fein Multimaster is a great tool designed for restorations and simple home repairs. Compatible with all sorts of accessories, a Bosch Mulit-X can deal with grout removal, sanding and other such things as plunge cuts and work with both wood and metal. A universal interface can also be purchased as well as the etched depth gauge which can be used for accurate capacity measurements. What's nice about the Mulit-X is that it can be used with other attachments or accessories from other manufacturers. There are basically two different packages for the Bosch.
